Supporting CUT2MD: Strengthening Community Health

Diabetes is a crisis in many of our communities. Too many families live with the stress, cost, and health challenges that come with managing this chronic condition. Often, barriers like lack of access to care, limited health education, and stigma make things worse. CUT2MD is a program designed to change that. It offers a clear, accessible, and community-centered approach to diabetes management, delivered straight to people’s homes.

The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Maryland (MWPHGL of MD) has always been committed to uplifting our communities, not only through fraternal fellowship but through meaningful service. Supporting CUT2MD aligns with that mission perfectly. By raising funds to promote and expand this program, MWPHGL of MD can make a direct impact on the health of our neighbors while demonstrating real leadership in addressing a major public health issue.

1. Understanding the Challenge: Diabetes in Our Communities

Diabetes is more than a personal medical problem—it’s a public health emergency. Rates of diabetes are disproportionately high in Black and Brown communities, and Maryland is no exception.

Left unmanaged, diabetes leads to serious complications: blindness, kidney failure, amputations, stroke, heart disease, and early death. But it also creates a daily burden: constant glucose checks, dietary restrictions, financial stress, fear of complications.

Worse, social determinants of health—like limited access to medical care, food deserts, poverty, and systemic racism in healthcare—make management even harder. Many people skip appointments because they can’t afford them or don’t trust providers. They might not know how to track their blood sugar or make sense of their doctor’s instructions.

That’s the real problem CUT2MD is trying to solve: How do we meet people where they are, support them with education and tools, and remove barriers to better health?

2. What Makes CUT2MD Effective?

CUT2MD’s model is refreshingly practical. It doesn’t rely on people getting to a clinic they can’t reach, or trusting providers they don’t know. Instead, it offers:

  • Interactive Texts: Personalized tips and reminders sent directly to participants’ phones. This keeps them engaged and accountable in small, manageable ways.
  • At-Home A1C Kits: Participants can test their blood sugar levels at home, privately and safely. No need for expensive lab visits or time off work.
  • Free One-on-One Coaching: Four sessions with a diabetes expert who knows the community’s needs and realities. This personal guidance can be transformative—giving people knowledge and confidence.
  • New Beginnings Discussion Groups: A place to share experiences, ask questions, and get emotional support from peers. Diabetes can be isolating, but CUT2MD creates solidarity.
  • Financial Incentives: Participants earn money for completing program milestones, plus weekly chances to win gift cards. This recognizes their time and encourages follow-through.

Most importantly, CUT2MD is designed with respect for the people it serves. It doesn’t shame or blame participants. It empowers them to take charge of their health on their own terms.

3. Benefits to the Community

When people enroll in CUT2MD and stick with it, the benefits multiply:

  • Improved Health Outcomes: Better blood sugar control means fewer complications, hospitalizations, and early deaths.
  • Reduced Healthcare Costs: Preventing complications saves families—and the healthcare system—thousands of dollars per person.
  • Greater Health Literacy: Participants learn about diabetes, nutrition, medication, and lifestyle changes in clear, practical language.
  • Stronger Social Support: Discussion groups and coaching reduce stigma, loneliness, and stress.
  • Economic Relief: Incentives and gift cards can help with food, transportation, or bills. Even small financial boosts make a difference.
  • Empowered Communities: When people have tools and knowledge, they can teach and support others. CUT2MD isn’t just an individual program—it’s a seed for community transformation.

Supporting CUT2MD means investing in these outcomes. It’s not charity. It’s community-building at its best.

4. Why MWPHGL of MD Should Support This Initiative

The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Maryland has always been more than a fraternal order. It is a force for good—a visible, respected leader in our communities. Our mission includes brotherly love, relief, and truth. CUT2MD touches all of these.

  • Brotherly Love: This program is about caring for our neighbors. Diabetes doesn’t just affect one person—it affects entire families. Supporting CUT2MD shows that the Lodge cares about the whole person, their health, their family, and their future.
  • Relief: Diabetes is a burden. CUT2MD offers real, practical relief by giving people the tools to manage it better.
  • Truth: Education is at the heart of Masonry. CUT2MD fights misinformation and confusion about diabetes with clear, culturally competent, truthful guidance.

By supporting this program, MWPHGL of MD demonstrates its commitment to serving where the need is greatest. It shows leadership not only in words but in action.

5. A Call to Action

CUT2MD is ready to help. The question is whether we’re ready to help it reach more people.

The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Maryland has always answered the call when the community needed it most. Now is one of those moments. Diabetes is robbing our people of years of life, stealing family breadwinners, driving up healthcare debt, and deepening health inequities.

CUT2MD offers a proven, accessible, respectful approach to changing that. But it needs funding to grow.

By leading fundraising efforts, the MWPHGL of MD can:

  • Help hundreds of people control their diabetes and avoid devastating complications.
  • Build stronger, healthier families and neighborhoods.
  • Show the Lodge’s leadership, compassion, and relevance.
  • Unite members around a shared mission of service.

In Masonry, we talk about making good men better. But what about making our whole community better? Supporting CUT2MD is one way to do exactly that.
